Industrial plants and their equipment (assets) normally have a useful operational life of 20-50+ years. This is called the Asset Life Cycle. Many plants, although their individual pieces of equipment are replaced more frequently, operate for 100+ years. The time required to engineer and install the original capital project(s) (aka the Project Life Cycle) represents a tiny portion of the Asset Life Cycle. Thus, leaders must adopt an Asset Life Cycle approach to optimize their ongoing leadership and management of the plant’s safety and profitability.
